Palo Santo is also known as holy wood or sacred wood and dates back hundreds of years.  It was used by the ancient shamans for spiritual purposes.  They believe that there are magical spirits that live within the tree and when the tree dies, the oil is produced by the spirits.  

This sacred tree was also used for purifying the body from negative energy, it's used the same way in South America that white sage is used in North America.
